Food:

What food you choose is 100% up to you!

We Choose food based on:

Meeting WSAVA Guidelines, a company that not only Meets AAFCO Guidelines but Does AAFCO Food Trials, companies with NO recalls or very few recalls & use crude proteins/fats & Ingredient Lists to Help decide as well.

Regarding the 3rd-6th week of Life:

We Normally* feed the puppies 3 times a day (9/10 AM, 2/3 PM & 7/8 PM) using the Purina Sport dry dog food mixed & softened with FOSTER CARE Puppy Formula starting at 3-4 Weeks old! We, also, add NuVet Vitamin Powder to Food.

*We do Free Feed with Large Litters or if we feel some puppies may still be hungry.

Then they are on Solid/Dry Purina Pro Plan Sport Diamond PUPPY Food beginning at 7 weeks old.

*We put food down at Those Times and leave it down for 1-2 Hours then pick it up until next feeding BUT by 7 weeks it is left down All Night (along with Water) because they have a litter box in their crate!

Dog Food We Use: Purina Pro Plan SPORT All Life Stages

TEMPORARILY, due to price increases, All Puppies will be Raised on Diamond PUPPY Dry Dog Food.

(Chewy discounts on Autoship and gets to you in 2-4 Days💕)

*Our Best advice: Research; do Not just trust the Internet or marketing employed by Dog food companies.

Use a trusted food that employs full-time Board Certified PhD Veterinary Nutritionists to formulate their diets and puts a lot of scientific research into their foods. Use a food that meets WSAVA guidelines and does AAFCO food trials (not just meets AAFCO minimum guidelines).

Also, Please, keep in mind, there is no such thing as a “picky eater” just a stubborn dog. How You Choose to feed your dog & what you Allow or the Boundaries You Set While Feeding Your Dog IS Part of Training Your dog.

We recommend Leaving food down for 30-60 Minutes.

If the dog does Not eat, pick it up & wait until the Next feeding time to offer it again.

Some dogs prefer to eat 1 time per day but that is Not advised for young dogs.

Dogs will Not starve themselves. They might go a day or two without eating out of stubbornness or challenging you, or simply not hungry but they Will give in*.

You are the boss. Not the dog.

*Of course if a dog is having negative reactions to the food such as itching, rashes, chewing feet, raw spots, diarrhea, vomiting, or any symptoms that may be caused by the food, please, take Your Dog and Food to the VETERINARIAN.

⚠️ 1) Keep in Mind Dog’s Stomachs are Small and they actually do Not need a lot of food each day.

The recommended amount ON the BAG IS PER DAY Not 2-3 times a day.

That recommendation is a good place to START when deciding how much to feed.

We do include an image on ideal & non-ideal body weight chart & Recommend getting Specific Caloric Amount from Your Dog's Veterinarian.

⚠️ 2) IF your Dog IS Refusing Food, Check the foods Smell & Texture!!

There Could be Mold or if it smells off or is slimy there could be a bacteria that your dog is sensing that you cannot and it May be a Bad Batch of Food!

Please, Always Smell/Check your dog's food upon Opening and each Day.

IF you Choose a Raw Diet: MAKE SURE IT IS FULLY BALANCED & talk to Your Dog's Vet!

Also, the Bacteria from FEEDING RAW stays in their mouth for at least 1 hour after ingesting & can be spread on surfaces; so, brushing teeth after and/or letting pup play outside for a bit after helps lessen the spread of harmful bacteria to Your Family.

⚠️ Some Peanut Butters, Toothpaste, Gum, Yogurt, Pepto Bismol & other things Now have XYLITOL which can Kill dogs!

All Natural Peanut Butter is Best & Check Ingredients.

WATER💦:

“General Guidelines:

Once your puppy is out of the weaning phase (*7-8 Weeks Old) and cruising toward adulthood, his water needs decrease significantly. The average dog needs between 1/2 ounce to 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight in a given day. If your puppy weighs 20 pounds, for instance, he’d need between 10 and 20 ounces of water for the day to stay hydrated. Most dogs will automatically hydrate to the correct amount, though some may over- or under drink.

Spotting Dehydration:

If a dog doesn’t have enough water to drink, he can quickly become dehydrated. Dehydration is extremely dangerous for your pup and can lead to serious health complications, so it’s important to be certain the dog has access to enough clean water. The easiest way to check for dehydration is to grab the skin on your dog’s neck and stretch it out. If the skin doesn’t snap back into place, your dog could be dealing with dehydration. Always check with a vet if you think your dog is experiencing health problems.

Dealing with Heat:

During the hot months of summer, your dog may have a tendency to overdrink after hanging out outside or completing a walk. In order to prevent bloat and ensure your dog doesn’t drink too much, drop a few ice cubes into his water bowl before filling it up. Licking and chewing the ice cubes will help him cool down, which in turn encourages him to drink less water. If you do take your dog out for walks or vigorous exercise, be sure to bring water to keep him hydrated along the way.

Toys:

Age Appropriate Toys & Games are Essential to Mental Stimulation, Desensitization/Socialization & Proper Puppy Development. However, if puppies are Misbehaving Repeatedly or having ongoing bad behavior Toys are NOT allowed Except DURING Training Games (they will learn, they ONLY have Fun WHILE they LISTEN)!

IMPORTANT:: No Chews, Treats, Toys, Blankets, or Anything Extra for Naughty Pups/Dogs, Just Bare Essentials!

— Treats, Praise & Pleasure/Comfort Items MUST be Earned & NEVER given within 24 HOURS of Bad* Behavior

Food should ONLY be Hand Fed by All Family Members for 5-7 DAYS for any Bad Behaviors to Reinforce Social Hierarchy.

*Accidents, Hyperness or a Delay in Obedience is NOT Bad Behavior & should have Gentle Correction Not Elimination Consequences.

Puppies have Very fragile & movable teeth so getting Soft rubbers, soft chews, soft toys and overall Age Appropriate toys will prevent a lot of trouble in the long run.

While a bone, hoof or even a regular Kong MAY SEEM harmless, they can cause Lifelong Damage to your puppies mouths!

Any hard toys & Even Seemingly soft toys that are Not AGE APPROPRIATE (Designed For Puppies) Can be a Choking Hazard &/or Can Ruin Your Puppy's Bite (creating the Potential for Injuries & Difficulties Eating).

⚠️ Avoid Regular dog toys or bones UNTIL 6+ Months!

⚠️ POPULAR DOG TOYS/CHEWS THAT ARE ACTUALLY DANGEROUS TO DOGS!! ⬇️

IF You Want to Choose Bones: RAW Bones are, to an Extent, Better than cooked bones. RAW Chicken Feet, Raw Turkey Wings/Necks have the potential to Clean Teeth & Curb the urge to chew BUT... ALL BONES RAW OR COOKED HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO SPLINTER! THERE ARE BETTER OPTIONS! (Check link Above).

** Please, Never leave Most Toys with your puppy Unsupervised!

Some toys are Very durable & as long as checking Daily are fine to leave down;

...But some toys like stuffed animals with Velcro or balls with felt, or toys with string/rope etc. Can either Choke your dog OR be Ingested & cause Intestinal Blockage!

General Training & Behaviors:

‼️ Remember, Everything you Allow now will become an Expectation or a Habit! ⚠️

So, if you take him/her out to go potty early in the morning and want him/her back in right away to go back to sleep, then be sure to enforce that sooner rather than later.

* IF you Want to go Back to Sleep, Do Not "Play" or engage puppy & keep a monotone voice/behavior even with praise so things stay calm.

Be sure to establish ALL boundaries Now ❤️😉‼️

⚠️ L.L.A will clarify upfront that the Alpha Roll and other Domination techniques are NOT Valid techniques and ARE Harmful and occasionally Abusive and we do NOT support those methods.

There is a Balance between Positive reinforcement, Positive Punishment, Negative Punishment & Negative Reinforcement‼️

L.L.A agrees with many Reputable trainers that there Cannot be a Purely “force-free” or “Purely Positive” method for training but Striking an animal is NOT training!

‼️ Training should be Appropriate, Non-Abusive, Properly Researched & Scientifically Supported!

As with Most things in life Balance is Best.

WALK AWAY IF FRUSTRATED. ⚠️

WHY is my New Puppy Humping?

To Avoid Destructive Behavior - here are a few ideas you will need patience to do but will get you Started in Training & Reducing Bad Behavior/boredom…

There are solutions even for busy people it’s just a lot of Trial and Error, Patience, Consistency & of course, WORK ‼️

⚠️ If you have dogs that like to chew on the house trim or table legs, etc. think of the angle, the material/texture and level of resistance.

Thinking of those "categories" will help when trying to find another chewing solution that provides WHAT they are Seeking. ⚠️

Keep in mind, yes, many of us are Very busy and Dogs that act out are usually Smart, Mentally unstimulated & Bored dogs.

Dogs need Mental Exercise Just as much as Physical Exercise, Every day.

⚠️ I suggest a wide variety of Puzzle Toys, Stuffable Toys (Like a Kong*), a Maze/Slo Feeder*, a Lickimat*, a Snufflemat, etc. to rotate between and really yummy, age appropriate treats to use when EARNED ❤️

Start utilizing Nose Work, even IN your home to keep your dog mentally stimulated and strengthen your dogs senses & even it’s bond with you! 🥰

If you do the above options be sure to still fit in 1-2 hours of Physical play including Training Games (Absolute Dogs) or a walk, fetch or tug-a-war (if you’re dog is Over 6 months) or other age appropriate things that really Engage your dog.

⚠️ A Bored dog IS a Destructive Dog but things can be done to Fix this without taking all of your time AND NOT having to watch them 24/7 AFTER you Train them. ❤️

Extra Tips:

1) Attach him/her to your hip with a leash and he/she can follow you everywhere all day.

2) Puppy pen with toys or block puppy into a certain area of the house (baby gates work well) so he/she can’t get into anything beyond what you give him/her.

3) Puppies should not just be confined or left alone 12-24 hours a Day, Independent time can vary from 4-8 Hours per day (ideally in small increments) but should not exceed that and Quality Play, Socialization, Desensitization, Stimulation & Training should Occur when with your puppy.

They REQUIRE training.

Give him/her something productive to do.

You can even build a PVC CUBE for inside to attach toys to & they can run through it.

Have Multiple Puzzle Toys & Rotate them Often to Keep pup from getting Bored.

While I’m working, homeschooling my kids, in class (online) or cleaning, mine play inside or outside in Covered, Large, Safe spaces.

Outdoors, we have a sandbox, a tunnel, some jumping/climbing platforms, a PVC pole with rope attached to tug on, a small pool if weather permits, ETC.

Indoors, we have various puzzles, games, chews, etc. we practice Independent Time with puppies in playpens but with dogs over 6 Months Old we use their crate (never over 2 hours During the day because they are crated all night) OR they are hanging out with me in in a room with something to chew on.

My puppies, also, get things like puppy Kong’s that you can put treats or NATURAL peanut butter* or Baby Food in, so, it takes them longer to eat (like 30 minutes vs 2 minutes) it is, also, good mental stimulation.

4) Teach him/her Commands & Play Games!!

This will do a few things for you. First, it will build your relationship with him/her. Second, it will give him/her stimulation mentally & (depending on the command) physically (which reduces destructive tendencies).

⚠️ Our Puppies Come with a Training Course BUT the Course we Recommend AFTERWARDS is AbsoluteDogs Sexier Than A Squirrel!!

5) Get Started in AGE APPROPRIATE Activities or Sports!! Like Nose Work!

& you can use AKC PAL to compete in Scent Work!

“The benefits of teaching your dog nose work include:

Fun way to give your dog more mental stimulation

Gives your dog extra physical stimulation

Nose work builds your dog’s confidence

Gives your dog a job to do

Easy way to bond with your dog

Nose work is fun & rewarding for dogs

EXTRA LINKS:

- Link One 🙃

- Link Two (ignore all the ads lol)

6) Put him/her on a schedule so he/she knows about when he/she will be going inside or outside or in his/her crate.

7) You have to be consistent. Yelling at a puppy does not do a thing. They don’t understand..

8) ⚠️ Sadly, 99% of the time, training issues are the trainer’s fault!

No 1 Method works for All Dogs!

⚠️ This applies to me as well! If your pup is not understanding you, you need to ask or show a different way. If you aren’t being consistent with him/her, be more consistent & it will help.

If you are yelling at him/her one minute & then loving on him/her the next, he/she is going to get confused very quickly.

⚠️ I’m not saying that lowering your voice is required, and to not use discipline, but it is a “time and place” situation & just like with little kids you should never discipline when angry. Also, being aggressive (verbally or physically) does NOT make the bad behavior just go away AND it WILL create Fear & a Lack of trust. Assertive & Aggressive are NOT the Same ⚠️

➡️ Here is an article worth reading by Mark Plonsky, Ph.D.:

“In conclusion, science does not say that animals learn better when using a force free/purely positive approach. Science (the Law of Effect) says that we learn from both pleasant as well as aversive events. The use of aversive events is an ethical question which should be analyzed using a cost-benefit analysis. I believe a balanced approach to dog training will place heavy emphasis on the use of pleasant events in training and use aversive events when a cost-benefit analysis suggests that it will be worthwhile to do so.

It is noteworthy that Steven Lindsay also advocates for a balanced approach. In Volume 1 (p. 301), he notes that since the turn of the 1900 century, "the pendulum has swung from a stubborn reliance on punishment and negative reinforcement to an equally unnatural extreme on which the use of punishment and negative reinforcement (in some quarters) is shunned to embrace a so-called "positive" approach to training and behavioral control. Extreme positions, whether based on good intentions or not, are typically based on irrational beliefs and assumptions--not scientific knowledge and experience.

..Instead of extreme positions, accusatory innuendo, moralizing, and half-truths, what is needed is a balanced and informed attitude regarding the practical use, misuse, and abuse of punishment."

"Various professional organizations including the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT), the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT), and the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) encourage the use of the LIMA or the Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive approach to behavior modification and training. It should be clear that I strongly agree with this approach. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) has published a position statement on the use of punishment in the behavior modification of animals.

While the LIMA approach as well as the position statement of the AVSAB on punishment strongly encourage the use of pleasant events in training, neither excludes the use of aversives. Thus, it seems that the balanced approach that I am advocating is not at all unique or uncommon.”

Potty Training & Litter Box Training:

⚠️ REMEMBER:

EVERY Training Method REQUIRES Consistency, Positive Reinforcement, BALANCE & Patience. Puppies are babies & will Not be house trained right away.

If they haven’t gotten it Completely after 3-4 weeks Changing the Method that they are Starting to Learn will Only Worsen/Delay things!⚠️

Some dogs are just slow learners and still adjusting to their environment.

Some Potty Training Options:

1) Porch Potty

2) Of course, there are Potty Pads.

We do Not recommend these left unsupervised...

They can be chewed up, swallowed & cause intestinal blockages.

IF you choose this method, please, use a potty pad holder to protect the puppy.

We, also, do Not recommend Scented pads because they will associate this smell with their potty area and if you use lavender pads and lavender detergent that might be unfortunate, haha.

3) You can, also, check out Potty Bells!! 🥰

They (at first You) Ring the bells 🔔near the door then go out to the same/desired area & give them the same, consistent command to go potty 😊

❗️It is IMPORTANT to have them follow you to their Potty Areas (indoor or outdoors) Every 30-45 Minutes until 4-6 Months of age & then every 60-90 Minutes from 6+ Months of age.

*Doing the same repetitive Command (like snapping or pointing & saying go potty) Helps Immensely to Establish Associations to these Commands and Using the Bathroom!

Also, Be Sure to have them walk the Same paths to the bathroom Areas, so, they Gain Knowledge of Where to go Potty.

Eventually they get the idea...

4) You can, also, get Washable Doggie Diapers or Wraps from Chewy to make sure that accidents aren’t a huge Pain in between the times you take them out while training! *Just take them out Normally (Every 30-60 minutes) to potty & check them Frequently to Avoid Accidents & rashes (just like with a baby!).

5) Litter Box Training is Very Beneficial because puppies struggle with holding their bowel movements for Up To the first Year and knowing what to do when the urge comes to them While Indoors is important. ❤️

I recommend buying a Large Rabbit Tray or Litter Box that can hold some Pine Shavings or Horse Bedding Pellets (IF Pellets dampen a Single Layer a bit so they are a little softer) and having that in the home usually in the crate, so, they can ALWAYS ACCESS it; that is a Key concept.

(Somewhere that any kids can’t get to)

Also, choose an area outside that you Want him/her to go potty & pour some of Pine Shavings or Horse Bedding Pellets there as well & then that is the Same smell and texture the puppy will associate with going potty & his/her Bathroom Area - Just like puppy uses with mom and litter mates.

I will add that a lot of Enthusiasm with Any Method helps!

...To the point you may feel silly 😅😁

Most Aussies are people pleasers and will repeat things (even bad things) if it gets them extra, or Any, attention.

⚠️ The thing most don’t think about is puppies are like toddlers!

They drive you up the wall & then give kisses & tons of love, haha.

Being put outside to potty without instruction...it's like putting your baby or Toddler in the bathroom, & unless you instruct them, are they automatically going to use the toilet?

...Or are they going to play with the rubber ducky in the bathtub and dump your shampoo everywhere?

⚠️ Keep everything picked up & out of reach just like you do with a little kid. What they can’t reach, they can’t destroy.

Boredom is the MAIN Reason for Destructive Behavior.

Next, is Curiosity or Pleasure;

Not Intent to be destructive.

⚠️ L.L.A does NOT recommend keeping puppy crated all the time if you are home, that won’t teach them anything beyond how to be bored..

Potty training & overall training is all about being consistent, Positive & Patient.

IF Puppy IS Struggling with His/Her Litter Box or Potty Pads, L.L.A Recommends:

Taking away all Soft bedding and blankets IN THEIR AREA & putting food/water in raised containers or feeding Outside of their area. (Toys are ok!)

Give it 5-7 Days of the Entire Floor of Their Area (playpen Or crate) being covered in the Shavings, Pellets or Pads so Every time they go to the bathroom it is Always on the Potty Method You Chose.

Then, reduce the Potty Area to 1/2 the area & keep their food/ water on the side without the potty area.

Add bedding/blankets to the side without the potty area, as well, ONCE He/She is Consistent about using Only the Pellet Side for Urinating/Defecating.

After another 5-7 days if you feel the area is larger than you’d like you Can reduce to a smaller area that can account for a Larger puppy going potty.

**IF you feel Puppy Needs MORE Time with a Larger potty area you Can wait 14 Days Before Reducing to Half and/or Before Removing Entirely. Our Recommended Days are just Suggestions.

EACH PUPPY WILL GO AT THEIR OWN PACE.

—> Please, keep in mind, due to moving to a new location/home puppy May take a couple days-weeks before developing Consistency & to gain Knowledge of it’s New Surrounding Areas! <—

Shavings or Pellets last longer than potty pads & are less likely to cause intestinal blockages as well.

It’s ~$6-$10 for a 40lb bag or Large Cube.

They are harder to clean up than potty pads though! 😅

Pine Shavings & Horse Bedding Pellets that are easy to get:

https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/tractor-supply-co-flake-premium-pine-shavings-covers-8-cu-ft

https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/tractor-supply-pine-pellet-stall-bedding-40-lb?cm_vc=-10005

Crate Training Steps:

We use a nice double door, thick, wire crate made by FRISCO on Chewy.com for ~$40-$70!

Recommended size is 36”+ for most Toys & 40”+ for most Minis

(and they come with a divider that you can cut a hole in for a doggy door to a litter side for overnight potty training!)

What to Put (and Not Put) in Your Dog's Crate

Other Things to Consider:

1) BUY a SmartPetLove Heartbeat & Warmer Puppy from us at Pick-Up!!

2) Try to AVOID feeding/watering the puppy/dog 2 hours before bed**.

*As long as Puppy/Dog is getting 1 ounce of water Per Pound (lb) of Body Weight Per Day Puppy should be fine ❤️

❗️Please, review our Food & Water Sections ABOVE!❗️

**However, IF using a Litter Box with Potty Shavings/Pellets or Potty Pads inside the crate then they can have Food and Water Constantly IN their Crate! 🥰

*IF crating during the day Without Potty Pellets or Pads, you can make "meal time" right when everyone gets home so there are a few hours before bed and so there is not as much stool to pass during the day or at night and Always take to the bathroom Right Before crating.

It IS best to feed them small meals a few times a day though.

3) Take the puppy/dog to the bathroom right before you put him/her in & be sure to Always use the same words (ex. “go potty” “go pee”). Consistency is Key.

4) To Lengthen sleeping hours, Put a blanket over the kennel to mostly black it out (leaving a good gap at the bottom for air flow) or put Crate in a room with Black-Out Curtains.

5) ‼️BEST TIP - Utilize Positive Punishment!

You CAN DO THIS ANYTIME, NOT JUST DURING CRATE TRAINING.

Every-Time puppy or dog Barks/Howls (or Anything over a Quiet Whimper) you ADD a Loud Stimulus that is Displeasing to the Dog (but NOT a normal Environment Sound) TO the Environment using Items OR a Speaker and Noise Apps.

Example 1: Something as Simple as leaving a Metal Pan & a Metal Spoon on the Outskirts of the room at night, so when puppy whines or barks more than once you get up & hit the pan. It makes a Safe but Harsh Sound Discouraging the Whining or Barking BUT puppy does Not realize the sound is coming from you!

* DO NOT STAND WHERE PUPPY CAN SEE YOU OR YOU WILL BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE UNPLEASANT SOUND!!

Example 2 (BEST): You CAN do this from Farther away & it Lessens your Chance of being seen! Every time puppy/dog barks you play loud GORILLA or Dinosaur sounds that the puppy/dog will Quickly ASSOCIATE with barking reducing or eliminating the barking while crated All Together!

(Noise Apps we use for Sound Socialization & this Crate Training Technique Images are in the Dropbox Link at the Beginning of this Email!)‼️

6) 2nd BEST TIP - Put a radio on a radio station (R&B, Hip-Hop, Country, Christian all seem to work well) right next to the kennel, low but loud enough to drown out house noise (Creaking Floors, Doors, toilet flushing, etc.) so puppy doesn’t feel alone and wake up to every noise.

7) If barking/howling/whining persists for over 1 week, Non-stop, after taking those steps you can try "Petsafe” Collar using the BEEP Feature OR an Ultimate Bark Control Box (Dog Silencer Max)...It lets off an ultrasonic noise when dogs bark that people cannot hear but they can (& Can in same cases Harm puppy ears) - Meaning, CHECK WITH VET, KEEP IT FAR ENOUGH IF USED & USE WITH CAUTION!

*Be sure to set the Dog Silencer to AUDIO when using it. It IS Annoying sometimes But it is CONSISTENT when You Cannot be & it WORKS.

Again, be sure NOT to place it too closely to the crate && to not have the sensitivity too high; If puppy makes a regular noise like bumping into crate or yawning, & it is TOO High, it Will go off & prove ineffective if it goes off other than when puppy barks.

Please, Test it while You OR Puppy is Outside by gently tapping the crate or doing a fake puppy yawn to see if it goes off.

8) Consider where the kennel is located or where you want to put it and try to choose a location that is isolated during bedtime.

9) (A very important step in My opinion) Stick to a routine 💕

This baby phase does Not last forever... some babies are harder than others but you Are a Parent now.

YOU GOT THIS!! 🥰😘

How to Choose a Professional Dog Trainer or Behavior Consultant

(According to CCPDT):

1. Check Their Certification

2. Ensure they Require Vaccination PROOF!

3. Go Over their Cleaning Procedures! Only A Few Chemicals actually Kill PARVO & You Must Use a Bristle Brush.

*Bleach & Accel diluted PROPERLY are Great options!!

4. Ask what Training Methods they Use and WHY. Do their Beliefs Align with Your Own?

*Ask for Credible sources Supporting their Training Methods & See how they respond & what sources they provide.

“Working with a qualified professional can, in some cases, mean the difference between a harmonious life with your dog and having to give up your dog for re-homing or euthanasia.

But the search process can be confusing. Dog training is a science, but the industry is (as yet) unregulated with no licensing requirements or regulatory oversight. This makes it difficult to know what to look for.

That’s where independent certification comes into the picture. Our certifications give you a way to hone in on dog training professionals whose knowledge and skills have stood up to a rigorous, standardized test. Here’s a guide for your search:

Step 1: Look for our certifications

The designations are: CPDT-KA, CPDT-KSA, CBCC-KA.

CPDT-KA indicates that a dog trainer has passed a comprehensive exam and has at least 300 hours of dog training experience.

CPDT-KSA indicates that a dog trainer has passed a comprehensive exam and an objective skills-based assessment along with at least 300 hours of dog training experience.

CBCC-KA indicates that a dog behavior consultant has passed a comprehensive exam on behavior modification and has at least 300 hours of of dog behavior consulting experience.

Step 2: Assess the trainer:

Browse the trainer’s website and any other marketing materials.

Does everything look and sound professional? Do the messages appeal to you?

If so, set up a phone call or in-person meeting.

Can the trainer answer your questions about training, behavior, and methods knowledgeably and clearly?

Is she (or he) patient and thorough in her replies?

Do you feel comfortable with her?

Does she have experience working with the problems you need help with?

Can she provide references from clients?

Step 3: Beware of red flags:

A couple of things should raise a red flag in your assessment. If the trainer focuses on a model of dominance and submission—using language like “dominant” and “alpha” —or uses primarily punishment based methods, that trainer doesn’t meet the standards of science-based training.”

Some toys are Very durable & as long as checking Daily are fine to leave down;

...But some toys like stuffed animals with Velcro or balls with felt, or toys with string/rope etc.

Next, is Curiosity or Pleasure;

Pine Shavings & Horse Bedding Pellets that are easy to get:

https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/tractor-supply-pine-pellet-stall-bedding-40-lb?cm_vc=-10005

Dogs, on the other hand, have a normal Ph balance of 6.2-7.4, which is more neutral.

Using a human shampoo on dogs disrupts the acid mantle, leaving your dog vulnerable to parasites, viruses, and bacteria.

It also makes his skin feel dry and flaky, which can lead to repeated scratching and abrasions. This makes it easy for bacteria to invade.” (AKC)

DENTAL CARE:

NAIL & DEW CLAW INFORMATION & CARE:

Do Dew Claws Have a Purpose?

"A dewclaw that is attached by bone to a dog’s front foot has a definite purpose. When dogs run, their front feet often bend to the point where their dew claws come in contact with the ground. At high speeds (especially when turning) or on slippery surfaces, these dewclaws provide extra traction and help stabilize the carpal (wrist) joint. Some dogs also use their dew claws to help them climb trees, hold objects to better chew on them, or climb out of the water if they’ve broken through ice. The usefulness of dewclaws that are only attached by skin is less clear."

Should Dew Claws be Removed?

"Because front dewclaws serve an important purpose, they should not be removed unless there is a very good reason to do so. In rare cases, a dog’s dewclaw may be severely injured or develop a disease (e.g., a cancerous tumor) and removal under those circumstances would certainly be in the dog’s best interests. These problems occur so infrequently, however, that removing healthy front dewclaws to prevent them makes little sense."

Canine Ear Cleaning, WHEN & HOW OFTEN??

Do All dogs need to have their Ears Cleaned?

❗️“No. While it is important to clean your dog’s ears when Needed, over-cleaning may cause irritation in the ear canal & this can lead to infection. Some dogs that have healthy, clean ears may never need to have their ears cleaned.

However, it is recommended to clean your dog’s ears if you notice discharge or an odor when examining the ear. Your Veterinarian can help you decide How Often your dog’s ears should be cleaned.”❗️

* "If your dog’s ears are red, inflamed, and painful, consult with your veterinarian PRIOR to cleaning. Your dog may have an ear infection or a ruptured ear drum.”

How do you know if your dog's ears need to be cleaned?

❗️“If they look and smell good, leave them alone. As long as your pooch's ears are healthy, they don’t need to be cleaned. In fact, cleaning a healthy ear can damage its self-cleaning abilities.”❗️

What If You Use An Ineffective Cleaner?

“Lots of cats and dogs get itchy, dirty ears. It's Sometimes safe to clean their ears at home, but Not Always. Not every “itchy ear” episode is the same.“

“Diving right in with a medication or cleaner — even one that your vet previously prescribed — can cause problems.”

❗️”In the best case scenario, if your pet has a yeast infection in their ear and you use a cleaner or medication that works best against bacteria versus yeast, you’re not likely to fix the problem, you could actually make it worse (by creating an environment that’s even more favorable to yeast growth), and you may be prolonging your pet’s discomfort.”❗️

(This is 1 of the Reasons Why we recommend NuVet Ear Cleaner, developed by a Veterinarian)

What If There's A Ruptured Eardrum?

❗️”On the other end of the spectrum, if your pet’s eardrum is ruptured — which can easily happen with long-standing ear infections, or in the presence of a foreign body, like a "foxtail," or a tumor/polyp — the medication or cleaner you put into your pet’s ear(s) could actually cause deafness and much more severe pain.” ❗️

How Often Should I Clean My Dog’s Ears?

“The regularity with which you clean Your dog’s ears depends on your pet's breed, coat, level of activity, age, & ear wax production.”

______________

⚠️ 6 MISTAKES to AVOID:

1) Using the WRONG Ear Cleaning Solution.

(We recommend NuVet developed by a Veterinarian)

2) NOT using ENOUGH Ear Cleaning Solution.

3) Using a cotton swab (the sticks 😬)!

4) Cleaning your dog’s ears next to your brand new couch 😅

5) Disciplining your dog during the cleaning process.

6) Waiting to long see your veterinarian!!

❗️** NO Two Dogs are Alike! ALWAYS, Check with Your Dog’s Veterinarian for Your Dog’s SPECIFIC Ear Cleaning Recommendations!❗️

How to NATURALLY TREAT EXTERNAL & INTERNAL PARASITES/WORMS

AND WHY L.L.A does Not use HEARTWORM Medication as a PREVENTATIVE:

How to NATURALLY TREAT EXTERNAL & INTERNAL PARASITES/WORMS

AND WHY L.L.A does Not use HEARTWORM Medication as a PREVENTATIVE:

We do not believe in using Heartworm/Flea/Tick medications as PREVENTATIVES and do not recommend them as such.

Heartworm drugs are Pesticides and they do NOT truly prevent Heartworm.

They Only Treat it.

So, you are CONSTANTLY TREATING them for something they do Not have in a Misguided Attempt to “Prevent” it.

You May Think:

Why constantly TREAT with Harmful, Unnatural Medications for something MY Pet does NOT even have when it Can be PREVENTED with SAFE, Natural Alternatives??

Our Question exactly!

So, Here are Some Links WITH ALTERNATIVES & Options!

We encourage you to Research things for Yourself.

It IS a choice You Can make with your Veterinarian.

We have plenty of healthy dogs.

Our dogs, regularly, have little exposure to mosquitos & get tested every 6-12 months or get tested IF we go somewhere high risk or where there were many mosquitoes.

We test based on Recommendations Provided by our Dog’s Licensed Veterinarian.

We prefer Natural & Alternative Methods of Prevention & Will/DO Treat when Needed.

You can routinely Test for Heartworm for about $45-$60 each test & then Treat it when Needed (you can test every 3-12 months or as recommended by a licensed veterinarian based on your City & State).

Our vets do Not push the issue But Some Vets and Big Pharma DO Push Medications & Toxic drugs.

—> YOU are Your Pets Best Advocate though!

—> Please, Ask what Heartworm / Flea / Tick Medication does, Ask for the ingredients & Realize that Not All Areas are a high or even moderate risk for Heartworm.

I will Not give my animal Monthly "Medicine" that is not good for their body to Treat something they do Not have.

I Will Proactively take steps to Prevent it & Test for it. ❤️

Here are Some Links that Help sum up WHY we feel the way we do;

..but there is A Lot more information you can find especially if you look at actual studies & further Research.

➡️ FDA warns that certain Flea/Tick/Heartworm Medications are causing ataxia, muscle tremors and seizures to the extent they plan to require Labels to now List those side-effects!!

“The FDA is working with manufacturers of isoxazoline products to include new label information to highlight neurologic events because these events were seen consistently across the isoxazoline class of products.”

We do not have any flea or tick issues and Love using Diatomaceous Earth FOOD GRADE Powder as a Mild PREVENTATIVE.

—> For EXTERNAL PARASITES we Recommend using it freely (avoiding inhalation) to Externally rub down your pet & sprinkle on their bedding & furniture to kill any fleas or eggs that May be present.

—> For INTERNAL PARASITES use 1/2 TSP ORALLY, ONCE, DAILY for the FIRST WEEK of getting your new puppy because it is a NATURAL Dewormer & the stress of new environments & new people can cause worms.

*You Dampen the FOOD GRADE DE to make it like a muddy texture & then put it on the roof of the mouth. The First Link Below gives Directions 😊

For EXTERNAL Parasites ONLY Unless consulting your Vet

*Giardia & Coccidia are Not Worms!

They are Parasites.

Giardia is Best treated with Safeguard or Panacur (aka Fenbendazole or an alternative a Vet offers).

Coccidia is Best treated with a Coccidiostat (like Toltrazuril, Corrid, Albon or an alternative a Vet offers).

Worms/Parasites are common in young puppies just like kids and colds 😅

The deworming care & vaccine care continues well into the 16th week and then off and on in adulthood as well.

Coccidia & Giardia can be Asymptomatic.

L.L.A Never sends home any puppies who are Showing symptoms and none of our adults have active parasites that go untreated.

Also, there is much controversy whether puppies & dogs should be treated if they are not showing clinical symptoms.

Our veterinarians approve of our dewormer & parasitic protocol and do Not advise us to treat our animals beyond those protocols Unless they are symptomatic.

Dogs/Puppies can get Giardia not only from mom or feces but simply from drinking out of a Puddle/Pond in the yard.

Also, coccidia is similar to human herpes in the way that it never goes away once infected (and most puppies get it passed down from mom).

Coccidia remains dormant unless the puppy’s immune system is compromised or they are stressed out.

Coccidia is known to flare up in young and old dogs & is in about 75% of all dogs (give or take a small percentage).

Both are not life threatening*!

*Unless they are presenting with severe symptoms and those symptoms are ignored.

Both Giardia & Coccidia can easily be treated ❤️

I would definitely use the medications recommended by the Veterinarian IF a puppy or dog tests Positive for Active Parasites and treatment is what the Veterinarian is recommending.

— Please, Note: Positive Antigens are Not the same as Active Parasites (Positive Antigens proves they HAD it at)

L.L.A has to use Dewormers/Anti-Parasitics with all of our pups bi-weekly until 16 weeks old and then twice a year thereafter with our adults.

It’s just one of the common Puppy thing we as pet owners have to do. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Some Natural Repellents:

“Apple Cider Vinegar – The smell of vinegar alone is enough to repel a mosquito, but apple cider vinegar is more than just a repellent. It is a natural conditioner to the skin and hair. It is also great for adding shine and luster to the coat. A really great way to utilize ACV to repel bugs, is to steep apple cider vinegar in rosemary, lavender, neem leaf, and/or other bug repelling herbs for two weeks, shaking the jar daily. Strain herbs from the ACV and spray onto your dog. Allow to dry and do not rinse! Works great on people too and is safe on and around children as well.”

(Cited)

“Essential Oils– There are many essential oils that help repel all sorts of bugs and are safe to use in dog sprays! You can substitute these essential oils into your dog’s homemade flea & tick spray, based off of what you have on hand.

PLEASE REMEMBER –

Dogs should be thought of like babies when it comes to essential oils and the amount to use.

Not only do they have sensitive noses but they also have smaller organs than we do.

Some of the essential oils you Can Safely mix with water & use ON dog Collars, Bandanas, Canine Coats, Etc. for Flea/Tick Prevention are: Lavender, Lemon, Citronella, Sage/Clary Sage, Bergamot, Cedar-Wood Lemon Eucalyptus, Lemongrass, Peppermint, Geranium, Sweet Orange, and Rosemary."⬅️

Spay/Neuter Info for “Pet Only” Contracts:

Spaying/Neutering can do WHAT to my Dog’s Health?! 😱

More & More Research is Proving, There is NO COOKIE CUTTER AGE for a Spay or Neuter!

Research is PROVING we are Causing so many LIFELONG Issues due to Hormonal Imbalance in our dog’s & actually Reducing their Lifespan By Removing these ESSENTIAL SEX HORMONES.

“Recent scientific studies that find that sterilizing a dog, particularly before it has fully matured, can lead to significant future health issues, including cancer (such as osteosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma and lymphosarcoma), hip dysplasia, ligament damage, chronic incontinence and even a shorter lifespan.”

AKC on Spay/Neuter "Government" Clarification

Sterilization While Keeping SEX HORMONES is IDEAL!

Meaning Tubal Ligations, Hysterectomies & Vasectomies are Preferred But hard to come by as Most Veterinarians are usually not taught those procedures in the U.S.

...BUT it does Not Hurt to Call around & Ask!

⚠️ IF you do not Feel you can handle an Intact Dog RESPONSIBLY OR HAVE A SPAY/NEUTER CONTRACT, then YES, you SHOULD Spay/Neuter BUT, PLEASE, wait until OVER ONE (1) YEAR of AGE.

AND/OR

⚠️ Talk to your dog’s Vet & Others about SPARING SEX HORMONE SECRETING TISSUES (aka ovaries or testes).

It IS Worth the Effort & Conversation as Sparing these Sex Hormones Can lengthen your pet’s Life & Prevent preventable life altering diseases CAUSED by Hormone Imbalance. ⚠️

More Information on this from Dr. Becker

Got a Puppy Elsewhere and Required to Spay/Neuter??

Even under Contract you Can attempt to Sterilize While Keeping Sex Hormones!!

However, IF you Choose to FULLY Spay/Neuter your pet, the low cost spay/neuter clinics are often the way to go and we Generally Recommend not to spay/neuter dogs UNDER 12-18 months of Age.

Low Cost Clinics have ample experience at spay and neuter because that is something they do every day.

⚠️ Always take a sheet on MDR1 to ANY Veterinarian ⚠️

A More expensive Vet does NOT always mean better but cheaper does NOT always mean a better value either!

Ask what is included ( I.V Fluids, scalpel vs. laser, types of sutures, pain meds, etc.) & what care your dog is going to get & Compare Veterinarians.

In California:

Spay/Neuters are $50-$800 at most low cost clinics.

If done at most other veterinarian offices/hospitals it can range from $350-$10,000.

“Pet microchips are small, permanent identification chips that are about the size of a grain of rice. They are injected between the shoulder blades with a needle, and the process is about as quick as a vaccination. Most pets go through the one-time process without so much as a squeak.

Found Animal microchips are internationally recognized and meet ISO requirements (International Organization for Standardization). This promotes compatibility between chips and scanners.

Your pet’s microchip ID code, just like your pet, is one of a kind. When your lost pet is taken to an animal shelter or veterinary clinic, they will scan your pet for a microchip and read its unique code. This code is stored with your pet’s profile and linked to your contact information.

Registration AND keeping your contact information Updated is just as important as microchipping.”
